The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes
A consulting detective in Baker Street, a doctor who writes it all down, and twelve cases that fixed the shape every detective story has followed since: a king’s compromising photograph, a pawnbroker paid a good wage to copy out the encyclopedia, a whistle in the dark of a locked bedroom. Doyle wrote them for a magazine one a month, and they still move at that pace. Watson narrates throughout, so it arrives as somebody already telling you the story.
